Like any appliance, your disposal will experience normal wear and tear over time, and will eventually become worn out and in need of replacing. According to experts, your disposal should last you about 10-12 years, but of course the lifespan of your disposal will vary depending on how much use it gets.
With that in mind, here are signs that it’s time to replace your garbage disposal:
1. It Clogs Often
Recurring clogs are a sign that either the blades of the disposal have dulled, or you may need a bigger disposal because your current unit can’t handle the workload.
What size disposal should I get?
- 1-2 people in the household: ⅓-½ HP motor
- 3-6 person household: ½-¾ HP motor
- 5-8 person household: ¾-1 HP motor
- 8+ person household: 1-2 HP motor
2. You’re Constantly Using the Reset Button
There is a small red button on the bottom of the disposal that restores the power to the motor if it overloads and trips the circuit breaker. If you find yourself using this button often, the disposal motor is weakening and needs to be replaced.
3. The Disposal is Leaking
If you’ve noticed water dripping from the bottom of your disposal, it could mean that there are cracks on the inside of the unit. These cracks occur from normal wear and tear over time, and the only way to fix the problem is by replacing the disposal.
4. Humming, but Not Grinding
If your disposal hums loudly without actually turning on, it’s most likely due to a dead motor. The hum you hear means the unit is receiving electrical power, but the motor has gone out and can’t turn the blades. We recommend replacing the whole disposal at this point, as a new motor often costs the same as a new unit.
